RINGVORLESUNG: „Transformation of Society“
Shaping the future:
"How "the New" is entering our world. About Platon and freshmen."
Abstract summary:
Transformation of Society can only succeed with change and renewal. To shape our future we are in need of innovation and creativity. Karl-Heinz Brodbeck - author of an interesting book about creativity is teaching us creativity as an individual and a social process. That ist interesting, because he is approaching the phenomenon of creativity from the viewpoint of social and economic sciences. He therefore focuses on the sozial process of creativity which he has found in Platons definition of "poiesis". Brodbeck says that the New is created through discourse and discussion. Through the collision of differing opinions, of variating theories and different knowledge and profession. This can be supported e.g. by inderdisziplinarity, when different professionals mingle and therefore are confronted with something New to themselves. This is what we would call a creative milieu.
"And how does the New enter our educational system, our Universities? - with the freshmen!" This could be the answer given by a research about the DaVinci-Project. The quotation is taken from an article in the german magazine for university development "Zeitschrift für Hochschulentwicklung" by the authors Tobias Härtel and Isa Jahnke.
Freshmen are "the New" at Universities and they therefore have a certain responsibility. They are salt in the soup and are bringing new ideas into a closed system. Without freshmen our universities would lack a lot of creativity. These Universities are providing a space - literally and figuratively - for trial and error. Errors are therefore an essential part of creative advancement.
